Varicose veins: More Than a Cosmetic Concern

Varicose veins, those bulging, twisted veins visible just beneath the surface of your skin, are often regarded merely as a cosmetic issue. However, they can sometimes be signs of underlying venous disease and should not be overlooked.

Varicose veins occur due to weakened valves in the veins of your legs. When these valves do not function properly, blood can pool in your veins, causing them to enlarge and become varicose. While they are most common in the legs due to the pressure of standing and walking, they can occur anywhere in the body.

Symptoms & Risk Factors of Varicose Vein You Should Know:

Symptoms of varicose veins can include visible bulging veins, aching pain, a feeling of heaviness in the legs, and swelling in the lower legs.
In severe cases, varicose veins can lead to more serious health problems, such as venous leg ulcers, bleeding, or venous eczema.
Risk factors for varicose veins include age, family history, obesity, pregnancy, and prolonged standing.

While varicose veins are usually not dangerous, they can indicate chronic venous insufficiency, affecting blood flow from the legs back to the heart. This can potentially increase the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in the deep veins).
