Central Venous Stenting: A Minimally Invasive Procedure for Better Blood Flow

Central venous stenosis, or the narrowing of veins that lead to the heart, can lead to various health problems, such as swelling, pain, and difficulty breathing. Fortunately, central venous stenting, a minimally invasive procedure, can help alleviate these symptoms and improve blood flow.

Our team of experienced vascular and interventional radiologists at Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) is trained to perform this procedure safely and effectively.

Central Venous Stenting

What is it, and How Does it Work?

Central venous stenting is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat central venous stenosis, which occurs when the veins that lead to the heart become narrowed or blocked. During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into the affected vein under the guidance of imaging technology, such as ultrasound or X-ray. Once the catheter is in place, a stent, or a small, expandable metal or plastic mesh tube, is inserted into the narrowed section of the vein. The stent is then expanded, opening the vein and allowing blood to flow more freely.

What Conditions Can Central Venous Stenting Treat?

Central venous stenting is commonly used to treat central venous stenosis, which can occur as a result of a variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Dialysis access dysfunction
  • Cancer treatments that require the use of a central venous catheter
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Blood clotting disorders

Benefits and Potential Side Effects

Central venous stenting offers a variety of benefits for patients, including improved blood flow, reduced pain and swelling, and an overall improvement in quality of life. Because it is a minimally invasive procedure, it also carries a lower risk of complications and a shorter recovery time than traditional surgery.

As with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects and risks associated with central venous stenting. These can include bleeding, infection, damage to the vein, and allergic reactions to the contrast dye used during the procedure. However, these risks are generally low, and our experienced team of vascular and interventional radiologists takes every precaution to ensure the safety of our patients.

Are You a Candidate for Central Venous Stenting?

If you are experiencing symptoms of central venous stenosis, such as swelling, pain, or difficulty breathing, you may be a candidate for central venous stenting. Our team of vascular and interventional radiologists will perform a thorough evaluation and medical history review to determine if the procedure is right for you. If central venous stenting is recommended, we will work closely with you to develop a personalised treatment plan that meets your unique needs and goals.
