Non-Healing Ulcers: A Sign Not to Ignore

Often overlooked in discussions about heart health, non-healing ulcers - particularly those on the lower limbs - could suggest an underlying cardiovascular problem. These wounds fail to heal over time and can signal an issue with your body's circulatory system.

Non-healing ulcers are often associated with a condition known as peripheral arterial disease (PAD). In PAD, the arteries supplying blood to your limbs become narrowed or blocked, usually due to atherosclerosis (plaque build-up). This hampers blood flow, particularly to the legs and feet, leading to issues like pain while walking and non-healing ulcers.

Here are key factors to bear in mind:

Non-healing ulcers often appear on the feet or legs, ranging from a shallow red crater that only involves the skin to a deep wound exposing tendons or bones.
The most characteristic symptom of PAD is claudication which is a pain or cramping in the legs while walking and relieved with rest. This can also be present in these patients. In severe or advanced cases, the symptom of pain persists even at rest.
People with diabetes are particularly at risk, as nerve damage may impair their ability to feel the pain or discomfort from these wounds.

A non-healing ulcer should never be ignored. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications, including infection and, in extreme cases, the necessity of amputation.
