Pain in the Leg While Walking: An Indicator Worth Attention

Experiencing leg pain while walking might seem like a simple strain or sign of ageing. However, it could point towards a serious cardiovascular condition known as Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).

PAD is characterised by plaque buildup in the arteries that supply blood to your limbs, particularly the legs. This impedes blood flow, causing symptoms like pain or discomfort while walking, a condition medically referred to as 'claudication.'

Here is what you need to know:

Intermittent claudication, the hallmark of PAD, often manifests as muscle pain or cramping in your legs or arms triggered by activity and disappears after a few minutes of rest.
The severity of claudication varies widely, from mild discomfort to debilitating pain.
PAD can also lead to other symptoms, such as non-healing wounds on the legs or feet, changes in skin colour or temperature, and slower growth of leg hair or toenails.

Even if the pain is mild or only occurs occasionally, it is crucial not to ignore it. PAD is a significant indicator of accumulated fatty deposits in arteries, raising your risk of heart attack and stroke.
