Dialysis access - construction, assessment, and repair

Dialysis Access: Constructing, Assessing, and Repairing Lifelines

Dialysis is crucial for individuals with end-stage kidney disease in maintaining their health and well-being. Dialysis access refers to creating a pathway to remove and return blood during haemodialysis, effectively removing waste products and excess fluid from the body.

Understanding the different aspects of dialysis access is vital for those undergoing dialysis:

Dialysis access can be achieved through three main types: arteriovenous fistula (AVF), arteriovenous graft (AVG), and central venous catheter (CVC).
AVF involves surgically connecting an artery to a vein, creating a long-lasting access point. AVG utilises a synthetic tube to connect an artery and vein when a direct connection of vein and artery is not possible. CVC involves the placement of a catheter directly into a large vein, usually in the neck or groin.
Regular assessment and monitoring of dialysis access are essential to ensure proper function and identify potential complications.

In some cases, dialysis access may encounter complications that require repair or intervention:

1. Common issues include access stenosis (narrowing), infection, thrombosis (clot formation), and aneurysm (abnormal widening).
2. Timely evaluation and treatment of these complications are necessary to maintain the integrity and longevity of dialysis access.
