Deep vein thrombosis: When Blood Clots Pose a Threat

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a condition characterised by the formation of blood clots in deep veins, usually in the legs. If left untreated, these clots can travel to the lungs, causing a potentially life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism.

Understanding the signs, symptoms, and risks associated with DVT is crucial for safeguarding your vascular health:

Common symptoms of DVT include pain, swelling, warmth, and redness in the affected leg. However, some cases may present with no noticeable symptoms.
Risk factors for DVT include prolonged immobility, recent surgery or trauma, pregnancy, hormonal contraception or hormone replacement therapy, obesity, smoking, and a family history of blood clotting disorders.
Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent complications and reduce the risk of recurrence.

If DVT is suspected, various diagnostic tests, such as ultrasound or venography, may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment options typically include:

Anticoagulant medication prevents the clot from growing and reduces the risk of new clots forming.
Compression stockings or sleeves to improve blood flow and reduce swelling.
In some cases, clot-dissolving medications or surgical interventions may be necessary.
